Dealing with Nightmarish Clients and Still Providing Quality Web Design

No matter how premium quality web design services you offer, there are always some clients working with whom is a nightmarish experience. Any website designer who has been in the industry for a considerable time is well aware of this fact. These clients never know what they really want in their website and they are never satisfied, no matter how much you tweak your designs and do according to their orders.

Of course, there are other clients also who can be satisfied easily.

Usually, a web designer knows more about quality website design than a client. It is because web designers are familiar with the technical elements, the aesthetics and all the procedures involved. However, working towards satisfying the aforementioned clients is a more challenging task for a website designer. The first step to take is, provide everything you have promised in your contract. There should be no room for the clients to point out a flaw from your end of the contract.

Contract

It is advisable to disclose your terms of business to your client explicitly before taking up a project. The terms involve everything from who would own the copyright of the design to the payment to any extra charge that may have to be paid for revisions. In short, everything related to the project should be defined clearly in your contract.

If you do not yet have a full legal contract to present to your clients, make one as soon as possible. Otherwise, it is likely that any good client can turn into a nightmarish client. Make sure that both you and your client sign the contract before the project begins.

If stock art needs to be inserted into the design, inform your client about the terms of licensing. Almost every website has to use stock art in some way or the other. So it is better to tell your clients beforehand about it and if possible, include it in your contract clearly.

Ownership

As far as ownership of the design is concerned, it is always owned by the client. But when the ownership of source files for a design comes into the limelight, many designers face a dilemma as to whether to keep it or give it to the client, though most clients do not really know what to do with it. You can keep it with you but in case your client has an in-house designer and wants to do some changes, it’s better to give him the ownership.

What If You Have to Imitate/Replicate Other Designers’ Works

Sometimes, clients may give you some sites to ‘take examples from’. After you have taken an example from those sites and created a design, they press you to make changes and in the course of it, you realize that the clients just want a design exactly like the example they have given you. There are 2 types of clients who tell designers to copy or replicate other designers’ works – one is the client who just doesn’t want to believe that there is something called ‘copyright violation’ and how unethical it is. The other is the nightmarish client who is aware of the legal problems associated with copyright violation but want to copy anyway.

The best thing to do is terminate the project. You will not be able to convince either of them and they will be terminating the project anyway if you keep saying ‘no’ to their demand.

Extra Payment

You never know when there is a need for you to do some revisions or modifications. Inform your clients beforehand that you need to charge extra money for revisions or modifications. Write it in your contract and make sure your client goes through it.

Finally, every designer faces problems dealing with their clients. Be upfront in your discussions with your client and be honest. That can prevent a lot of problems from taking place.
